During this year in math, we used a new kind of text book called Connected Math 2. This is the first time we used this concept and we use this book to prepare us for next year. This book has eight different units and we got to six so far. We did Prime Time, Bits and Pieces I and II, Shapes and Designs, Covering and Surrounding, and How Likely Is It. There are 4 or 5 chapters in each book, and there are at least 4 or 5 investigations. Every day, we go over something different in our books and have homework almost every day. We call our homework page ACE (Applications, Connections, and Extensions). Mrs. Mannon and Mrs. Wester will give us a scattered amount of questions. The next day, we go over our ACE for about 30 minutes in math class. We keep our notebooks a certain way to make sure that we’re organized with our papers. We have 3 different sections in our notebook. The tabs are called homework Class Work, Homework, and Assessments. We do this because our notebook gets graded so we don’t loose them and Mrs. Mannon doesn’t have to constantly look through our papers. It’s also good for the notebooks to be organized if we ever have an open book test and we need to look over our notes, we can find it right away. If we need to review something in class that we did, it’s there in your tabs and you don’t have to struggle to find it. In our notebooks, we also keep our labsheet, vocabulary, and a sheet that keeps record of your homework that’s graded as well. A labsheet is a packet of papers that help us with a certain investigation that we’re doing. There’s a pouch in our notebook where we keep our pencils, rulers, protractors, and other things we need for the book. This stuff doesn’t get graded though. When we do investigations, we have questions that we have to answer. This helps us understand what we have to do for the investigations and a test for precautions. For the questions, we have to tell why we think that and an example. When we do these questions, we work on them several ways. What we usually do, we work as a table or work with partners. We can sometimes choose our partners or Mrs. Wester and Mrs. Mannon may choose them. We could work by ourselves or unusually work as a class in the investigation. If we don’t finish the investigation during math class, we have to finish it as homework and check it the next day. If we don’t finish it for homework, it will affect our homework grade. My favorite unit was Shapes and Designs. I liked this unit because I’m really good at geometry and I like shapes. Even though I don’t like math, I enjoyed it and I had no struggle with it. The main thing we learned about Shapes and Designs was polygons and not polygons. It said that a shape has to be a polygon by having angles and straight lines. We also learned some particular polygons like regular and irregular polygons. An irregular polygon is a polygon that looks different how they actually should be. For example, a star is an irregular polygon. A regular polygon is like a square, triangle, and a pentagon. The book told about the kinds of triangles they are. For example, an Isosceles Triangle , Right Triangle , and equilateral triangle We did a lot of things in math this year. This book really reviewed about how math will be next year. It just didn't help prepare me, it prepared other kids that are soon going to middle school as well. If the school is doing Connected Math next year, I hope is easier during next year.
